Making use of my grandmother's pareo as a beach blanket in Santa Monica

Making use of my grandmother’s pareo as a beach blanket in Santa Monica

Southern California can get a bit of a bad rap from its northern neighbors, but I don’t really get it. Every time I visit LA, the sun is shining, people are smiling, and there’s just a general happy vibe throughout the city (save the parking lot highways). We took advantage of the holiday Monday this weekend and headed south to LA for a few days to visit friends and soak up the sunshine, and the 80-degree weather certainly didn’t disappoint. One of my favorite parts of the city is Santa Monica – with plenty of sparkling coastline and loads of shopping to boot – and we spent a lovely afternoon there lazing on the beach and wandering around the promenade, followed by a dinner of delicious ceviche and sangria back in Hollywood at the very awesome Los Balcónes del Peru.

On Sunday we headed to the Hollywood Farmers’ Market and later visited Calle Olvera, a super colorful Mexican walking street in one of the oldest parts of the city, where we gorged on Mexican fare and explored shops filled to the brim with Mexican art and trinkets. All in all, a very colorful and sunny long weekend. Happy Tuesday, friends.

  1. Does southern Cali really have a bad reputation? I’ve always thought of it as the ideal getaway spot! For good reason, after looking at these lovely pictures!

  2. Last weekend was the PERFECT weekend to do outdoor activities like that!! Santa Monica is definitely one of my favorite places in LA- I just love the beachy yet chic vibe that the area has. And Olvera street is so much fun- it slightly transports you to another country without being too over the top! I will have to check out that restaurant that you guys went to 🙂
