Carolina paddle-boarding

Been hopping around a bit lately  – back east, then back west, around the Bay and beyond. I’ve been pretty focused on fog-dodging – that San Francisco fog is one aggressive beast this time of year, hence the lack of SF-centric photos. They tell me summer comes in September; in the meantime, I’m taking matters into my own hands and sun-chasing.

Music Festing, Napa Style

Bottlerock1 – San Francisco Style Blogger

I spent the past few days up in the Napa Valley at the inaugural Bottle Rock music festival and I feel a bit like I’ve just returned from some sort of awesome NorCal utopia. The festival was everything I wanted it to be and more, with sets by favorites Best Coast, the Alabama Shakes, the Black Keys, Jackson Browne, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (and a zillion other badass groups), plus  Napa wine and food, festival fashion, and a whole lotta sunshine. We posted up at the Silverado Resort, which has a serious Caddyshack vibe (in the loveliest of ways, I promise) and were able to spend some time exploring downtown Napa due to the excellent placement of the festival grounds.

All in all, a very successful first year for a festival that I hope becomes an annual tradition.

What to Pack: Weekend in Charleston

I haven’t been back to the East Coast since we moved west in December, so I’m happy to say that I’ll be heading to Charleston, S.C., this weekend to celebrate the impending wedding of one of my nearest and dearest. The wedding isn’t til May, but a pre-nuptial ladies’ weekend is in order and I’m pumped for some beach time, Chucktown bar-hopping and QT with the bride-to-be. There’s little I love more (or know better) than the Carolina shore in April, so packing for this trip will be a breeze. Going in my bag: several shades of blue, loose knits, summerweight scarves and crisp whites.

As a big fan of most things tropical, I made a serious beeline across the store when I spotted this flamingo-printed top in Zara recently. It works pretty perfectly as part of a resort look, but I’ll be just as happy to pair it with jeans and blazers back in San Francisco (where things are a good deal cooler than they were in Palm Springs, the site of these photos). Bonus: The print might be just sunny enough to keep me warm on the especially foggy SF days.

Timeliness

One of the most glorious things about the fashion world is that it’s always, always at least a few steps ahead of the rest of us, giving us not only months of preparation to get our style in line with seasons to come, but also mid-season sales as soon as a season has hardly begun. Case in point: No sooner did things begin to cool off around here than my favorite collection of online retailers launched some pretty sweet fall sales. Given that I’ve felt the need to layer on pretty much everything I own the past couple of days, I’d say these sales are particularly timely. Happy shopping!

To leather or to pleather?

There’s quite a bit of leather/pleather/vegan leather/various other leather lookalikes everywhere this season, in pretty much every form you can imagine. I’ve found myself craving leather in basically all of those forms, and have been doing a bit of hunting accordingly. In the search I’ve run into a bit of a quandary, however: leather or pleather?

The most obvious answer is that actual leather, with its buttery texture (and non-plastic existence), is far superior. But is it? The price tag would certainly have you think so, but given that there’s such a price differential – with the whole animal-friendly vs. anything-but-animal-friendly aspect to boot – isn’t fake leather worth some consideration?

Sure, the ’80s would have us believe that fake leather in any form, with it’s plasticky, rubbery texture reminiscent of films made in the San Fernando Valley is hardly something we’d want to put up against our skin, but lately I’ve started to wonder – if they can get so good at making fake burgers, fake bacon, fake fur, fake everything, why shouldn’t fake leather be improving all the while? I’d say we should investigate.

Gettin’ the Boot

Despite my aversion to all things involving cold weather, boots are one of my favorite forms of footwear, and holy crap there are some goodies out there right now.
